MySpiritual Retreat Center Recommendations

This page is to connect you to links to websites and addresses of places that you can go to have a guided spiritual retreat and/or spend some time in prayer and contemplation. I hope you will eventually get to go on a guided retreat somewhere.

Unlike popular conceptions, a "retreat" is not a time to go away to a monastery and do nothing. A retreat is a time away. There are many scripture references in the Christian New Testament where Jesus Christ went away to be alone with God. In fact, in Matthew Chapter 4 (along with the other "Synoptic Gospels": Mark and Luke) we find Jesus going out in the desert for forty days and nights to be tempted. But along with being tempted, he went out to be with God. We ought to do the same. The places which are listed below are places that you should consider.

We welcome your suggestions of sites across the world. Please send the website address and your review of the venue.

Abbey Gethsemani, Bardstown, Kentucky

ABBEY GETHSEMANI, Bardstown, Kentucky. Known for the spiritual master Thomas Merton and their sausages and cheeses, like most monasteries, this is a wonderful place to go on retreat. It is of the Order of Strict observances of the Benedictines, commonly known as "Cistercians". You may either go on your own guided retreat or just attend to the rhythm of the monks there. One warning, if you choose the latter it means that you will have to arise to be at the first service of singing the psalms at 3 a.m.. Be sure to click on the "A Monk's Day" link. It really is wonderfully accurate. This may sound crazy, but this truly could be one of the most incredible experiences of your devotional life in Jesus Christ.  Click on the picture to check the Abbey out.

Bethany Retreat House, East Chicago, IN

Bethany Retreat HouseA retreat house in a neighborhood of East Chicago, Indiana is counter-intuitive, but you will be pleasantly surprised if you go to Bethany.  The colors, the ambience, the comfortability of rooms, etc. make this an excellent spot to take a retreat.  I have spent three five day retreats there and can tell you that the staff has thought of everything.  Contact Bethany now by clicking on the picture to go to their website.

Creighton University On Line Retreat

Creighton University On-Line Retreat This was recommended to me by people on the go.  This site gives you a truly on-line retreat.  We recommend it for people who are not sure if they want to go on a retreat, or what it involves.   It is an on-line "how to" of retreats.  We "cotton" to this idea because our "get spiritual" approach was not received well at first, but now we are giving advice on five continents.  Click on the picture to check it out.

Lake Junaluska, North Carolina

LAKE JUNALUSKA, Lake Junaluska, North Carolina. This is in one of the most pristine areas of NorthHTML clipboard Carolina. It is a wonderful retreat center, usually for groups. It is in the mountains of North Carolina. This retreat center is also for recreational purposes.  Click on the picture to check it out.

Saint Meinrad Abbey, St. Meinrad, Indiana

ST. MEINRAD ABBEY, St. Meinrad, Indiana. This is a wonderful place, in Indiana. Yes, it is true, there are monks in Southern Indiana! They always have a list of wonderful retreats. Although I have never been to this monastery, I have many friends who have. One of them was even moved to become an oblate (a lay person who keeps the same vows as much as possible out in the work-a-day world, "oblate" means "offering". They take vows to present themselves as an "offering" through Jesus Christ to the Father in Heaven.). Click on the picture to find the retreat schedule.

"I have become acquainted with Mark Kurowski  and learned of his journey to the fullness of faith in the Catholic Church.  He gained a master's degree at the Divinity School of Duke University.  Then having been received into the Church he completed the theology studies for the priesthood at Mundelein Seminary of the Archdiocese of Chicago.  I have found his web site reflections solidly Catholic and helpful to all who are striving to follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
